Trump Administration Further Strips Oil Field Bird Protections

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is formally clawing back endangered species protections for the lesser prairie chicken, who’s habitat includes the oil fields of the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico.

The bird has been at the center of several lawsuits from environmental groups and oil trade associations because its protection causes tension with oil and gas development due to the location of its habitat. The Permian Basin is North America’s most productive oil field.

The agency issued two actions in the Federal Register, both set to be published Thursday.
