Toxic Chemical Releases Fell 10% in 2020, EPA Analysis Shows (1)

A 10% drop occurred in toxic chemicals released into the environment between 2019 and 2020, the EPA announced Thursday.

The drop was seen only in the roughly 800 chemicals released by the more than 21,000 facilities required to report their pollution annually to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxics Release Inventory, or TRI. The EPA on Thursday released its 2020 TRI National Analysis featuring the data showing the decline.

The analysis covers chemicals released into the environment during the 2020 calendar year by the manufacturing, mining, electric utility and hazardous waste management sectors, the agency said.
