Top Lithium Exporter Says Prices to Stay High on Demand Rise

Lithium prices are forecast to remain high as demand for the metal used in electric vehicle batteries surges until at least the middle of the next decade, according to government researchers in Australia, the biggest exporter.

Global demand will rise to about 1.3 million metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent by 2027 from about 149,000 tons in 2012, driven mainly by growth in the transportation sector, the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science said Oct. 2 in a report.

“Lithium prices are expected to remain well above their historical average, but volatility should reduce in time,” the report said. ...
