Top Federal Scientist Urges Broad Look at Nonstick Chemicals

Persistent nonstick chemical exposure is widespread and researchers need to take a broader look at the issue, a top environmental scientist said Aug. 12.

Linda Birnbaum, head of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, said humans are exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through a variety of means including the food they eat and how it is packaged as well as through other consumer products and activities.

“We need to move beyond the issue of PFAS in drinking water” and take a more holistic approach, she told a group of scientists considering the issue.
