Titanium Mine Near Okefenokee Swamp Sold to Conservation Group

A titanium dioxide mine site near Georgia’s Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has been sold to the Conservation Fund, the group announced Friday.

The sale ends a yearslong battle over the proposed mine, which the Biden administration said would eventually drain North America’s largest and wildest blackwater swamp.

Twin Pines Minerals LLC proposed to build its titanium dioxide mine on the eastern flank of the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia. The state issued a draft permit for the mine in 2024, but no final permitting decision has been made.
