Texas Suit Begins Legal Battle Over Oil and Gas Methane Rule

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) is spearheading a legal challenge to the EPA’s finalized oil and gas methane rule, published in the Federal Register on Friday.

The rule was finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency in December, in tandem with COP28 talks in Dubai. The standards require tougher inspections and efforts to prevent methane leaks, which make up an outsized percentage of planet-warming gases. The standards go into effect on May 7.

Advocates celebrated the long-awaited rule, while some critics cautioned that the action’s price tag for the more stringent monitoring and control requirements might make legal waves.
