Sunoco, Oil Companies Lose Appeal in Dual Hawaii Climate Cases

Chevron Corp., Sunoco LP, and other oil companies suffered another legal defeat Thursday, after a circuit panel reinforced a decision to keep dual climate cases from Hawaii in state courts.

Lower courts sent climate liability lawsuits from Maui and Honolulu back to local venues where they were filed, which prompted industry attorneys to appeal the decisions to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

But that panel affirmed the remand to state court, ruling that companies failed to convince them that the cases brought up federal issues or extended beyond fossil fuel misinformation.
