Suncor Energy Fined $80,000 for Sour Gas Leak in Alberta, Canada

Suncor Energy Inc. pleaded guilty Friday in Alberta, Canada to breaching its license by releasing an air effluent in 2018 and will pay a fine of C$100,000 ($79,965), according to a province statement.

As part of its plea, C$99,000 will go to a hospital for respiratory equipment, Suncor spokeswoman Melanie Ducharme said.

The leak occurred because a valve in a coker unit at the company’s Edmonton 142,000-barrel-a-day refinery didn’t fully close during the stream drying phase on July 18, 2018, the province statement said.
