Steel Company to Pay $4.1 Million in California Pollution Deal

California attorneys and the state’s toxic substances agency reached a $4.1 million settlement on Wednesday with Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. over allegations of air and water pollution in a West Oakland community.

The state in 2015 began an investigation to look into claims the steel shredding and recycling facility was violating local environmental laws by emitting toxic chemicals like lead and particulate matter into the surrounding neighborhood. The neighborhood disproportionately suffers from health and environmental burdens, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.
