South Africa Court Halts Mining at Heritage Site

A South African museum obtained a court order to halt diamond mining at a provincial heritage site in the Northern Cape. The Northern Cape High Court in Kimberley issued the ruling March 19 to stop, at least temporarily, mining conducted by the Jackie M. Wesi Mining Ltd. The McGregor Museum had applied for the court order. Mining operations at Canteen Kopje, an archaeological and historic heritage site near Barkly West in the Northern Cape, began March 18 after the Department of Minerals and Energy issued a permit for part of the site to be mined.
