Solar Win in Florida Overshadowed by Trump’s Fossil Pledge

A solar power victory in the Sunshine State may be overshadowed by Republican president-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to promote coal and other fossil fuels.

Florida voters rejected a controversial ballot initiative critics say was designed to slow the growth of solar power by making it easier to impose fees on rooftop systems. Duke Energy Corp., NextEra Energy Inc., Southern Co. and Emera Inc. spent about $20 million backing the measure, which failed to win the 60 percent of votes needed for passage Nov. 8, according to the Florida Divisions of Elections website. Opponents of the measure spent about $1.6 million.
