Shell Units Will Pay $2.85 Million in Contamination Settlement

Shell USA Inc. and Equilon Enterprises LLC agreed to pay a refining company $2.85 million to clean up hazardous substances released from an oil refinery in Illinois.

Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel of the US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois approved the deal, saying she found the agreement to be “in good faith” and “procedurally and substantively fair.”

Premcor Refining Group Inc. said in its 2021 second amended complaint that it had resolved its liability under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act with Illinois for response actions and costs at the refinery in Hartford.
