Senate Passes Bill to Increase US-Produced Nuclear Reactor Fuel

A program to increase US production of enriched uranium for nuclear reactors would be created under legislation that passed the Senate late Thursday by voice vote, according to Sarah Durdaller, a spokeswoman for Senator John Barrasso, a co-sponsor of the bill.

  • Legislation creates a “Nuclear Fuel Security Program” that would require the Energy Department to acquire at least 100 metric tons of low enriched uranium per year by the end of 2026
