Senate Adds Funds to Defense Bill to Study ‘Forever Chemicals’

The Senate, with backing from both parties, agreed Tuesday to boost funding for a federal study of so-called forever chemicals known as PFAS during a debate on the broad defense bill.

The chamber approved by voice vote an amendment by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), to provide a $5 million boost to a $10 million study of PFAS and water contamination, to its defense authorization measure (S. 4049).

The Senate is expected to wrap up consideration of the fiscal 2021 measure this week.
