Second Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale Draws Environmental Lawsuit

Environmental groups challenged the recent oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, alleging the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management failed to consider how increased industrial activity could impact the regional ecosystems.

The sale, which generated $47 million in bids for drilling plots across 141,000 acres of federal waters, occurred on March 11 without the necessary environmental reviews or studies on impacts to the critically endangered Rice’s whale, according to the complaint in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
