April 9, 2024, 3:19 PM UTC

Sasol Chemicals will pay $1.4 million to settle alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at its facility in Westlake, La., according to the Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday.

While settling alleged violations found during a 2021 evaluation of chemical accident prevention requirements, a fire occurred at Sasol that resulted in a shelter-in-place order for Westlake.

In addition to the civil penalty, Sasol must also improve procedures to maintain the integrity of process equipment, resolve overdue compliance audit findings, and improve implementation practices of facility operating procedures, said the agency.
