Exxon Mobil Corp., BP PLC, and Chevron Corp. were among the 29 oil, gas, and coal companies sued by Santa Cruz, Calif., contending their actions contributed to the devastating wildfires across California.
The Dec. 20 suit comes on the heels of a handful of similar suits by California cities challenging the companies for allegedly contributing to climate change.
Other defendants in the Santa Cruz suit include Shell Oil Products Co., Citgo Petroleum Corp.; ConocoPhillips Co.; Anadarko Petroleum Corp.; Occidental Chemical Corp.; Marathon Oil Co., Hess Corp.; and Apache Corp.
