San Diego Must Cover Cleanup Costs at Contaminated Navy Site

San Diego, and not the US government, is liable for the $16 million spent cleaning up a former Navy training site because the city owns both the sewer system and airport that caused toxic runoff into a boat channel, a federal judge ruled.

The US District Court for the Southern District of California on Thursday granted the federal government summary judgment in San Diego’s Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act suit, stating the US presented enough evidence to establish the city’s liability in site contamination.
