A San Diego man who was arrested in March for trying to smuggle climate-warming pollutants through the southern border pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday, according to the Justice Department.
Michael Hart’s case is the first prosecution under the 2020 American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, which seeks to draw down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
Between June and December 2022, Hart sold HFCs on websites like Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp, according to court documents.
