Right-leaning European Union lawmakers are pushing to stop the phase out of the combustion engine in cars, a key pillar of the bloc’s drive to become climate neutral by the middle of the century.
Jens Gieseke, a German member of parliament for the European People’s Party, has put forward an amendment that average emissions in an automaker’s fleet should only be cut by 90% by 2035. The European Commission has proposed a 100% reduction, which would have effectively banned the combustion engine in new vehicles.
