Republicans Deride ‘Burdensome’ EPA Chemicals Safety Reviews

The Toxic Substances Control Act imposes burdensome restrictions on the chemicals and semiconductor industries and urgently needs reform, industry representatives and Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee said during a hearing Wednesday.

Democrats said the lack of staff at the Environmental Protection Agency will impede implementation of any TSCA overhaul Congress may pass.

The committee is considering draft legislation that would amend TSCA, possibly making substantial changes to the process the EPA uses to determine whether a new chemical can be safely manufactured or imported into the US. The House is separately pursuing its own proposal.
