Puerto Rico City to Invest $85 Million in Sewage System Updates

The Municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico, will spend $85 million over about six years to investigate and update its stormwater system as a part of a settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency over illegal pollution levels.

The agency outlined infrastructure updates to reduce pollution discharge in nearby rivers and the Caribbean Sea in concurrent complaint and proposed consent decree filings Tuesday with the US District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.

Ponce will also pay $25,000 in civil penalties for violating its Clean Water Act permit and failing to track and report discharges, the consent decree says.
