A private Montana ski resort is facing a complaint that maintaining its golf courses has caused algae blooms to develop in the Gallatin River.
The Yellowstone Mountain Club allegedly over-irrigates its golf course next to a tributary of the river that late author Norman Maclean featured in his semi-autobiographical novella, “A River Runs Through It,” that was adapted into a 1992 film.
Cottonwood Environmental Law Center says the result from the irrigation and dumping of treated sewage is nitrogen pollution, and the club lacks the required National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit.
