Pollutants Contributing to EU Acid Rain Continue to Decline, Report to UN Says

Emissions in the European Union of the main air pollutants that cause acid rain continued to fall in 2012, according to a report prepared for the U.N. Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution.

The report, published by the European Environment Agency June 30, said that sulfur dioxide emissions dropped by 9.7 percent between 2011 and 2012, contributing to an overall decline of 84 percent relative to 1990, and emissions of nitrogen oxides fell by 3.4 percent, contributing to an overall 51 percent cut compared to 1990.
