Pigment Restrictions Next Step in EPA Actions on 10 Chemicals

The possibility that workers’ lungs could be damaged by a reddish-blue dye must be reduced through regulation, the EPA has concluded in a final, revised examination of that chemical’s risks scheduled to publish on Tuesday.

Only two companies, the BASF Corp. and Sun Chemical Co., made or imported the dye, pigment violet 29 (PV29), in recent years and did so in volumes of less than 1 million pounds annually, according to information reported to the Environmental Protection Agency. That makes PV29 a relatively low-production chemical.
