Pfizer Unit Must Pay for Damage Near Superfund Site, NJ Says (1)

Pfizer Inc. unit Wyeth Holdings LLC must pay for damages and costs associated with contaminants from the American Cyanamid Superfund site it owns, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection told a federal court.

The agency and the Administrator of the New Jersey Spill Compensation Fund alleged that hazardous materials including iron oxide waste, volatile organic chemicals, and PCBs—which can be carcinogenic—discharged from the site in Somerset County.

The contaminants have contributed to the degradation of wetland habitats at the site and floodplain and riparian habitats near the Cuckels Brook and Raritan River, they say.
