The Department of Defense must provide Congress more details and examples of factors affecting costs to investigate and clean up PFAS, according to the government’s chief watchdog.

Lawmakers lack the full visibility needed to decide about the billions of dollars the military will need as it keeps working on 718 military installations where per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were or may have been used and released, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Congress’ investigative arm, wrote in its report released Monday and later reissued online on Tuesday to include the department’s response.
