The Department of Defense temporarily halted its incineration of firefighting foam and other materials containing PFAS, pledging it will soon issue disposal guidance that Congress required two years ago.
The department issued the temporary ban in an April 26 memo that was shared and discussed Tuesday at a PFAS conference. The Pentagon said it is banning incineration of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), a specialized type of firefighting foam that contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, used for jet fuel and other fires on liquids. Incineration of any PFAS-containing media recovered during DOD’s cleanup processes also is prohibited.
