The Department of Defense updated its guidancefor military facilities needing to manage or destroy PFAS-containing wastes at hundreds of bases across the US.
The department estimates it has more than two million gallons of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), which contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), to destroy. An additional 1.5 million gallons of rinse water with PFAS will be generated as the department cleans out AFFF from firetrucks and other equipment, including airplane hangers. Contaminated soils and other materials also must be dealt with, it said.
