The Trump administration this week approved a lithium exploration project in southeast Oregon to help the US produce batteries, a development that environmental groups say comes at the expense of greater sage-grouse, cutthroat trout, and other imperiled species.
The Bureau of Land Management announced Thursday it approved the HiTech Lithium Exploration Plan, part of the McDermitt Lithium Project, in Malheur County, Oregon, near the Nevada border. Jindalee Lithium, an Australian company, is developing the site, which could produce 3 billion tons of lithium used in lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and other technology.
