Only US Lawmaker at COP30 Tells Nations to Stand Up to Trump

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, the only representative of the US federal government showing up at this year’s United Nations climate summit, has a simple message for the almost 200 countries gathered in Brazil: When you’re facing President Donald Trump’s ire, don’t back down.

The Democratic senator used his whirlwind visit to the COP30 conference to call on countries to show resolve and stay committed to their climate plans. He also pressed the European Union to stick with its carbon levies even as the bloc negotiates with the US on broader trade tariffs.
