Olin Challenges EPA’s Rule Set to Ban Camp Lejeune Solvent

Olin Corp. is asking a federal appeals court to review a new rule that will phase out nearly all uses of trichloroethylene, a solvent the Environmental Protection Agency has long classified as dangerous to human health.

The chemical and weapons manufacturer petitioned the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to review the rule finalized in December, which directs commercial units to rapidly eliminate the production, processing, import, and use of trichloroethylene. Extensive TCE water contamination in communities like Woburn, Mass., and Camp Lejeune led to thousands of lawsuits.
