Oil Sands Pipeline Opponents Target Banks as Court Options End

Opponents of Canadian oil sands development are appealing directly to the banks that finance pipeline projects as remedies through the courts dry up.

In a letter addressed to the chief executive officers of financial institutions including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Toronto-Dominion Bank and Royal Bank of Canada, forty indigenous woman urged the companies to stop supporting pipelines that transport crude from the oil sands. The letter highlights projects such as TC EnergyCorp.’s Keystone XL pipeline, Enbridge Inc.’s Line 3 and the Canadian government-owned Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, according to an email from the Indigenous Environmental Network. ...
