Oil Companies Prep for Another Climate Petition at Supreme Court

Exxon Mobil Corp. and other oil giants are planning another trip to the U.S. Supreme Court to try to block local governments from bringing climate liability cases in state court.

Industry lawyers on Monday asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to delay issuing a formal mandate that would cement the court’s recent decision largely favoring San Mateo County and other California local governments. The governments were seeking to hold fossil fuel companies financially accountable for the impacts of climate change.
