NYC’s Natural Gas Supply Almost Cut Off by Christmas 2022 Storm

Huge swaths of New York City almost saw furnaces and stoves go cold during the Christmas holiday last year as a historic winter storm imperiled natural gas shipments.

The pressure moving gas through interstate gas pipelines feeding Manhattan, the Bronx and parts of Queens fell so low “that the entire system would have shut down” had utility Consolidated Edison Inc. not acted to stabilize its system, said Willie Phillips, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Gas-system failures continue to threated large parts of the country during extreme weather events, he added.
