Nuclear Regulator’s Workforce Measures Fall Short, Auditors Find

The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission should establish measures to track the effectiveness of hiring efforts as it prepares for a wave of license applications from advanced nuclear reactors, government auditors recommended Thursday.

The NRC chairman should also direct staff to develop procedures related to those new reactor license applications, including guidance on pre-application activities, review schedules, and when to engage with a key reactor safety committee, the Government Accountability Office said.
