The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has directed staff to publish a proposed rule and draft guidance to establish a new licensing pathway for advanced reactors, the next step in a congressionally mandated rulemaking to aid the next generation of the nuclear power industry.
The proposed rule—which the commission will publish on the Federal Register in about six months—will lay out the first-ever regulatory framework developed for advanced technologies and designs beyond the conventional light-water reactors currently installed across the country.
