Nuclear and hydropower groups are pressing the Biden administration to allow as much as 20% of low-emitting power plants today to qualify for a lucrative tax credit intended to spur growth of hydrogen production without causing power grid emissions to spike.
The possible allowance has emerged as a key battleground in the Treasury Department’s work to finalize the 45V Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit, a closely watched incentive that has sharply divided the hydrogen industry and environmental groups. More than 28,000 comments have poured into the department around the comment deadline on Monday, according to the government’s online portal.
