NTP Issues Revised Preliminary Documents On Trichloroethylene Carcinogenicity Review

The National Toxicology Program released two revised preliminary documents Jan. 10 regarding the review for the potential reclassification of trichloroethylene (TCE), which is mainly used as a metal cleaner and degreaser, in the “Report on Carcinogens.”

NTP is considering reclassifying TCE from “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” to a “known carcinogen.” Classifying a substance as a known carcinogen would indicate a causal relationship between exposure to the chemical and human cancer, whereas the lesser classification indicates a potential causal relationship but admits other explanations are possible, according to the NTP.
