NRC Seeks to Fine U.S. Geological Survey for Test Reactor Issues

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing a rare fine against another federal agency for violating rules on operating a nuclear research reactor.

The NRC wants to fine the U.S. Geological Survey $7,250 for violations stemming from inadequate staffing and training at the USGS Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics, or TRIGA, research and test reactor in Denver, the NRC announced Feb. 5.

The TRIGA is a pool-type reactor fueled by low-enriched uranium that supports the survey’s scientific research on geologic, plant, and animal specimens, including work on dating and determining the composition of certain rocks.
