The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources has ordered the owners of three “high-hazard” dams in the state to address serious structural problems.
According a Dec. 16 agency announcement, the dams are at risk of failing and could cause loss of human life, damage to major roads or more than $200,000 in economic damage. The owners have been told they must drain or lower the water levels in impoundments and submit plans to either repair or breach their dams within 91 days, DENR said.
