New York’s Last Coal-Fired Power Plant to Retire Tuesday (1)

New York’s last coal-fired power plant is going dark, part of the state’s aggressive effort to fight climate change.

The 675-megawatt Somerset plant north of Buffalo hasn’t produced power since March 13 and will officially retire Tuesday, according to an emailed statement. Its sister plant north of Ithaca was closed in October and their owner has proposed turning them into data centers.

The closing is no surprise after New York adoptedemissions rules in May that would have required the facilities to invest in costly upgrades. And in June the state passed one of the country’s most aggressive climate laws, ...
