New York Bill Would Classify Fracking Waste As Hazardous (1)

New York state lawmakers passed legislation that would stop out-of-state hydraulic fracturing waste from being disposed of in state landfills.

The measure (S.3392/A.2655) passed by the state Senate on Wednesday and in the Assembly on Monday, would classify waste from natural gas or oil production as hazardous and require it be treated, stored, and disposed of as such.

The bill now heads to Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) for his consideration. State regulations would need to be updated within six months of the bill’s signing, according to the measure.
