New Rule Would Require Quick Lead Pipe Replacement, EPA Says

All lead water pipes nationwide would need to be replaced “as quickly as feasible” under the Biden administration’s upcoming lead and copper rule, the EPA said Friday in a court filing.

The Environmental Protection Agency will propose its revised lead and copper Rule in September 2023 with possible updates focusing on underserved communities, the agency said in its filing.

The EPA allowed a Trump-era rule to take effect in 2021 while it writes the new lead and copper rule to make it more expansive. The EPA expects the revised rule to take effect in 2024.
