New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) vetoed a bill on Friday night that would have limited the emission of toxic pollutants in an effort to lessen the pollutants’ effects on environmental justice communities.
The measure (S.4371D/A.6150B) would have required the state Department of Environmental Conservation to create air quality standards by 2024 for emissions of toxic air contaminants based on the potential adverse effects on human health of each contaminant.
Regulated contaminants included benzene, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, trichloroethylene and mercury.
