More GMO Apples Poised for Federal Approval

The U.S. Department of Agriculture appears ready to approve a third variety of genetically modified apples developed by Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc., according to documents posted online Aug. 10.

Okanagan, a Canadian company, developed Arctic Apples, which are genetically modified to resist browning. The USDA’s Animal and Plan Health Inspection Service, which regulates the introduction of certain genetically engineered organisms and products into the environment, has already approved two varieties of Arctic Apples: the Arctic Granny and the Arctic Golden.
