An area roughly the size of Rhode Island could be opened for coal mining on land that for more than 20 years was protected as part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, according to a proposal the Trump administration published Aug. 23.
The land was carved out of the former 1.8 million acre southern Utah monument when President Donald Trump shrank it in 2017.
