Monument Plan Opens Rhode Island-Sized Area to Coal Mining (1)

An area roughly the size of Rhode Island could be opened for coal mining on land that for more than 20 years was protected as part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, according to a proposal the Trump administration published Aug. 23.

The land was carved out of the former 1.8 million acre southern Utah monument when President Donald Trump shrank it in 2017.

The Bureau of Land Management proposal calls for opening large swaths of the 860,000-acre tract of remote canyons and desert to timber harvesting and energy development, including coal, wind and solar.
