Monsanto Loses Appeal on California’s Glyphosate Cancer Listing

A state appeals court in Fresno, Calif., has upheld a ruling rejecting Monsanto’s bid to keep a widely used ingredient in its Roundup herbicide off California’s public list of cancer-causing chemicals.

The company made a bid to remove glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—off of California’s list of hazardous chemicals under the state’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, also known as Prop. 65.

Should the decision not be overturned on appeal, the Prop. 65 listing means consumers and users must be warned of a chemical’s hazards on labels and other informational materials.
