Minnesota Advocates Launch Suit Against Trump Emission Exemption

A Minnesota environmental nonprofit says President Donald Trump doesn’t have the authority to extend air emission rule deadlines for taconite processing that releases mercury and other toxins, according to a lawsuit filed Monday.

Using an obscure Clean Air Act presidential exemption, Trump issued a proclamation in July 2025 that delayed deadlines for two years for the taconite iron ore processing industry. The exemption came despite adequate technology already being available for facilities to comply with the limits, according to the complaint filed by the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy and Natural Resources Defense Council.
