Merkel Cabinet Backs Plan to Pit Wind Against Solar in Auctions

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet approved plans for technology-neutral clean power auctions pitting onshore wind and solar developers against each other.

Germany will hold three 400-megawatt pilot auctions from next year to 2020, the Economy and Energy Ministry in Berlin said May 17 in an email. Depending on the outcome, the ministry may hold more tenders, it said.
